You weren’t there, Em!
W h e n ? When wasn’t I there?
I tried very hard to avoid it and stay away from ranting, but it’s been bubbling up and it’s finally bursting out, so get ready.
Although I understand the artistic and dramatic purpose for having Emily and the girls turn on Alison like this, I’m going to say why on a personal level, character and friendship-wise, Emily and the rest are very wrong in their abandonment of Alison.
First of all, let me remind you what Alison said right before Emily went off on her (even though it’s already written above):
You weren’t there!
She’s referring to the fact that Emily didn’t see for herself what kind of place Ali had been stuck in and what kind of memories she relived that made her give up Cyrus even though she desperately didn’t want to. It’s understandable that Emily would feel frustrated that Alison did what they asked her not to do, but how the hell does Emily equate going to the abandoned house with all those times the girls were put in those situations?
Every time something terrible happened to the girls, it was because they chose, either individually or collectively, to do what needed to be done to stop what was happening, and they ended up suffering for it. Hanna got run over because she spotted Noel, one of Mona’s minions. Emily got stuck in the elevator because she and Jason found out about Alison’s connection to Wilden, who was A’s dirty cop. Spencer went to Radley because she got obsessed with trying to figure out Toby, who was Mona’s puppet at the time, and found him “dead.”
However, Alison went to revisit that place against her own will. Or at least it wasn’t her decision to go there to ID Cyrus, which she’d agreed she wouldn’t ID him. And if my belief is correct, her going there was a machination from A because A wanted Ali to use her trauma to give up Cyrus so that A could later undo the whole story and ruin her reputation. So there’s no way Alison’s situation can even compare with the girls because she had it much worse. The girls, even though they didn’t choose the tormenting to happen to them, they chose what to do about it and then later got the consequences. Alison’s consequence was that she didn’t have a choice about going there, and she ended up doing something she couldn’t control because the memories overtook her.
And then comes Emily’s “because we stick together.”
DOES SHE NOT REMEMBER THAT SHE WENT AGAINST THE GIRLS BECAUSE THEY SUSPECTED PAIGE OF BEING A AND SHE CHOSE TO BELIEVE PAIGE OVER THEM. DOES SHE NOT REMEMBER HANNA GETTING ARRESTED OVER TRYING TO HIDE A GUN EVEN THOUGH THEY TOLD HER REPEATEDLY TO LEAVE IT ALONE. DOES SHE NOT REMEMBER THAT SPENCER JOINED THE A TEAM. DOES SHE NOT REMEMBER THAT ARIA DATED THEIR STALKER AND THAT WHEN SPENCER TRIED TO CONVINCE ARIA THAT HE WAS A, SHE AND HANNA CHOSE ARIA’S SIDE JUST BECAUSE SPENCER HAD TAKEN ONE TOO MANY PILLS, SOMETHING SHE WOULDN’T HAVE DONE IF THEY JUST “STUCK TOGETHER” ALL THE TIME. I’M SORRY EMILY BUT WHAT THE FUCK. YOU DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO BRING UP “STICKING TOGETHER” AS IF YOUR CORE FOUR HAS BEEN SO IMMACULATELY UNITED THROUGHOUT YOUR WHOLE ORDEAL. YOU GIRLS HAVE “STUCK TOGETHER” EVEN AFTER YOUR MISTAKES, BUT ONE MISTAKE FROM ALISON AND SHE’S SUDDENLY THE PERSON WHO HAS TURNED ON YOU AND IS AIMING TO BRING YOU DOWN AND THEREFORE YOU HAVE TO “CUT TIES” WITH HER????? HANNA, ARIA, AND SPENCER BETTER THANK THEIR FUCKING LUCKY STARS YOU NEVER TREATED THEM LIKE THAT OR THE SHOW WOULD BE CALLED SHITTY LITTLE INDIVIDUAL LIARS AND ALL OF YOU WOULD BE IN JAIL RIGHT NOW.
Oh and that reminds me, YOU WOULD BE IN JAIL RIGHT NOW IF ALISON HADN’T MADE UP THAT STORY AND GOTTEN CYRUS TO BE A’S PUPPET FOR A WHILE IN ORDER TO FIND OUT WHO A IS SO YOU AND HANNA AND SPENCER NEED TO SHUT THE FUCK UP AND QUIT BEING ASSHOLES AND THANK ALISON FOR ACTUALLY HAVING THE GUTS TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT FINDING OUT WHO FUCKING A IS.
DAMN. 5X12 BETTER FIX ALL THIS SHIT.
